From the 19th to 20th of April 2013, Kenya held its annual National Barista Championship. The event was the ninth edition of the already highly successful championship series.
The competition attracted over 50 competitors from Kenya’s premier hotels, restaurants and coffee houses. They took part in the knock-out rounds and then the lucky 18 proceeded to Semi Finals at the Junction Atrium and eventually the best six made it to final stage.

African Coffee Champion Takes on Uganda Challenge
Although the stimulating properties of coffee are thought to have been discovered in Africa – according to legend, by an Ethiopian goatherd – the consumption of the beverage is not as widespread in the continent as it is elsewhere in the world.

Why Café Africa
In Africa’s 25 coffee producing countries, over 20 million depend on coffee to a greater or lesser extent for their livelihood. Since 2006, Café Africa has been working with Africa’s coffee industry, first in Uganda, then Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cameroon and Ethiopia. The Tea, Coffee and Cocoa Global Industry Expo (COTECA), that took place in Hamburg from 20 to 22 September, saw around 3000 participants attend the trade fair.
Event organisers reported a strong representation from the tea, coffee and cocoa industries. In particular, a high level of participation from international exhibitors and visitors, as well as the professionalism of the audience, were seen as positive factors.

The Kenyan coffee industry has over the last decade lost nearly 10% of farm land to real estate and infrastructure projects.
