ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, May 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ – The Addis Ababa based METAD/Kabu Coffee Quality Control Laboratory has become the first privately owned African laboratory certified by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), the world’s largest coffee trade association.

Equipped with state-of-the-art coffee tasting technology, the METAD/Kabu Coffee Quality Control Laboratory was certified on Friday, May 17 by SCAA experts Skip Finley , Director, SCAA Board, and Marty Curtis , Coffee Quality Institute Instructor. The laboratory was established in the Gerji area of Addis Ababa with the mission to help drive global credibility for Ethiopia’s historic coffee market.

From the 19th to 20th of April 2013, Kenya held its annual National Barista Championship. The event was the ninth edition of the already highly successful championship series.
The competition attracted over 50 competitors from Kenya’s premier hotels, restaurants and coffee houses. They took part in the knock-out rounds and then the lucky 18 proceeded to Semi Finals at the Junction Atrium and eventually the best six made it to final stage.
